What this estimate does and does not do
This calculator estimates flooring quantity and cost from box coverage. It is useful for laminate, luxury vinyl plank, engineered plank, and similar boxed products. It does not validate subfloor flatness, moisture requirements, expansion gaps, acclimation, transitions, stair nosings, adhesive, or manufacturer warranty conditions. Always read the installation guide for your exact product.
Formula used
net area = room length × room width + extra area
order area = net area × (1 + waste %)
boxes needed = ceil(order area / box coverage)
purchased coverage = boxes needed × box coverage
spare area = purchased coverage - net areaWorked example
For a 12 ft × 15 ft room, 10% waste, and a flooring box that covers 22 ft²:
net area = 12 × 15 = 180 ft²
order area = 180 × 1.10 = 198 ft²

- Box coverage comes from your product label.
- Metric mode uses metres and square metres; imperial mode uses feet and square feet.
- The calculator does not subtract cabinets or islands unless you enter an adjusted area.
- Keep spare planks for future repairs if the product may be discontinued or lot-matched.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate flooring boxes?
Multiply room length by room width to get area, add a waste percentage, divide by the coverage printed on the flooring box, and round up to a whole box.
How much waste should I add for plank flooring?
Ten percent is a common starting point for straight layouts. Diagonal, herringbone, closets, many doorways, or first-time installation may need 15–20%.
Should I buy all flooring from the same lot?
Yes. Flooring colour and pattern can vary between production lots, so it is best to buy the full quantity, including waste, in one order.
Does underlayment need the waste allowance too?
Underlayment is usually calculated from net room area because it is trimmed flush and has less patterned waste than flooring planks.
