What this estimate does and does not do

This calculator estimates material quantity from bead geometry. It is a purchasing and planning tool, not a specification for waterproofing, firestopping, structural glazing, expansion joints, or code-controlled sealing. For wet areas, exterior joints, fire-rated penetrations, or moving joints, follow the sealant manufacturer’s data sheet and relevant building requirements.

Formula used

The calculator treats the caulk bead as a cross-section pushed along a joint length.

cross-section area = width × depth × shape factor
material volume = cross-section area × joint length
volume with waste = material volume × (1 + waste %)
tubes needed = ceil(volume with waste / tube volume)

Shape factors used:

  • Rectangular fill: 1.0
  • Triangular / tooled corner: 0.5
  • Round or oval bead: about 0.785

Worked example

For 15 m of joint, a 6 mm wide by 4 mm deep triangular bead, and a 310 mL tube:

area = 6 × 4 × 0.5 = 12 mm²
material = 15 × 12 = 180 mL
with 10% waste = 198 mL
tubes needed = ceil(198 / 310) = 1 tube

Assumptions

  • Metric mode uses metres for joint length, millimetres for bead dimensions, and mL for tube volume.
  • Imperial mode uses feet for joint length, inches for bead dimensions, and fl oz for tube volume.
  • Real coverage can be lower because tubes do not empty perfectly and bead size changes with gun angle, tip cut, and tooling.
  • Wide or deep joints may need backer rod rather than simply more caulk.

How much waste should I add?

Around 5–10% may be enough for clean, straight joints. Use 15–20% for irregular gaps, rough surfaces, exterior work, or if you are less experienced.
